These 10 Things Are Destroying Your Sexual Health

Has your sex life been somewhat struggling of late? Perhaps you have no libido to speak of or have been having trouble performing in the bedroom? Whatever the case, there’s a good chance that the following 10 factors may be holding you back. Here’s what you need to know…

1. High Stress Levels

Did you know that stress can significantly impact your libido and sexual performance? Chronic stress, whether it be work related or linked to something else entirely can lead to decreased desire, difficulties with arousal, and hindered sexual satisfaction.

If you’ve been feeling the pressure of late, make an effort to implement stress management techniques like exercise, meditation, or seeking professional help to alleviate stress.

2. Sedentary Lifestyle

A lack of physical activity can not only have a degenerative impact on your day to day life, but it will also negatively affect your sexual health as well.

Regular exercise improves blood flow, releases endorphins, and boosts energy levels, all of which can enhance your sexual function.

So, incorporate exercise into your daily routine if you wish to improve your overall health and sexual well-being.

It’s OK to have a lazy sofa day now and again, but get at least 30-minutes of physical exercise as well!

3. Poor Diet

Unhealthy eating habits can also have a detrimental impact on your sexual health.

A diet that is high in processed foods, saturated fats, and sugars can lead to excessive weight gain, reduced energy levels, poor self-esteem, and decreased libido.

As such, you should opt for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to support optimal sexual health.

4. Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Another serious problem is drinking alcohol excessively. Doing so will invariably impair sexual function and performance – particularly after many years of abuse.

Alcoholism can lead to erectile difficulties, decreased sensitivity, and reduced sexual desire. If you don’t like the sound of that then aim to practise moderation or seek help if you struggle with alcohol consumption.

5. Smoking

It is well documented that smoking cigarettes is bad for your health. Regarding sexual health, smoking damages blood vessels and restricts blood flow, thus leading to erectile dysfunction, decreased fertility, and reduced sexual pleasure.

Quitting smoking can not only improve your overall health and well-being, but also give you that extra boost in the bedroom.

6. Lack of Sleep

Sleep deprivation is dangerous and can have a negative impact on sexual health. It can lower libido, decrease energy levels, and impair sexual performance.

You must prioritise quality sleep by establishing a consistent sleep schedule and practising good sleep hygiene (e.g., investing in a high-quality mattress, going to bed at the same time each night, making sure your bedroom is quiet and at the right temperature, etc.).

7. Sedative Medications

Certain medications, such as antidepressants or antihistamines, can have side effects that negatively affect your sexual health.

You should discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider, as they may be able to adjust your medication or offer alternative solutions that may be less invasive in the sex department.

8. Lack of Communication

Poor communication with your partner is the ultimate killer of sexual intimacy and gratification. If you never talk about sex with your loved one, then how will you ever fully get to know and understand their desires, concerns, and boundaries?

For example, what if your partner is interested in using male sex toys but is terrified that you may ridicule them or be repulsed by the idea? You must establish a safe and open space for communication to enhance sexual health and a more fulfilling sexual relationship. That’s the key to ensuring that both you and your partner get the recognition you deserve.

9. Unresolved Relationship Issues

If you have any unresolved conflicts looming over your relationship or lack the necessary emotional connection with your spouse, it can have a terribly detrimental impact on your sexual relationship.

For those of you struggling to move beyond certain relationship issues, it may be worth seeking couples counselling or therapy so you can address these underlying issues and improve the overall health of your relationship – both inside and out of the bedroom.

10. Ignoring Sexual Health

Ignoring your sexual health is another guaranteed way to ruin your intimate relationship. The most successful and fulfilling sexual relationships are those where both parties prioritise their sexual health and personal well-being.

So, take the time to address the various issues that may be contributing to poor sexual health and libido and make the changes necessary to alleviate them. You owe it to yourself and your partner.
