Is whole milk as nutritious as formula?

Infant nutrition is one of the main aspects of providing healthy physical and mental development for the baby. That is why it is recommended to breastfeed the newborn at least till the age of 6 months. But there are situations when breastfeeding is unavailable. In that case, parents are to choose the most suitable nutrition for the baby. Special attention is given to the choice of milk products, as milk is one of the key sources of vital nutrients. Due to various factors, such as allergies, insufficient development of lactase, and others, the babies are to consume formula, but not whole milk. So, is whole milk as nutritious as formula or vice versa?

Cow’s milk formula and its ingredients

The formula is made according to strict standards of quality defined by the European Union. The formula based on cow’s milk is produced and adjusted to nutritionally resemble breast milk. As a rule of thumb, Cow’s Milk Formula ingredients are the following:

  1. The nutritional basics. These basics include proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, which are the main nutrients for balanced nutrition. They provide energy for the child’s growth and development. The formula based on cow’s milk can consist of two types of protein: whey and casein, which contain essential amino acids. The proteins are hydrolyzed to facilitate digestion and reduce the risk of allergic reactions.
  2.   Vitamins and minerals. Cow’s milk formula is full of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B12, vitamins A, D, and E, selenium, magnesium, and others, to ensure optimal health and the immune system.
  3. Essential fatty acids. Infant formula contains essential fatty acids (DHA and ARA) for the proper development of the nervous system and brain. Moreover, Omega-3 is mandatory for all infant formulas after the decision of the European Commission in 2020.
  4. Prebiotics and probiotics. Milk formulas may contain prebiotics and probiotics to support healthy intestinal microflora and improve digestion. Also, they enhance the protective properties of the immune system.

Whole milk against formula

The main distinguishing peculiarity between whole milk and formula are composition and nutritional qualities. Whole cow’s milk contains natural fats and proteins without any additional processing. On the other hand, formulas are developed according to the children at different stages of growth needs. One of the main advantages of formula over whole milk is the adaptation according to the baby’s specific needs. It is especially crucial when the baby has allergies or cow’s milk digestion problems. Besides, the formula can be produced based on goat’s milk. So parents can choose the best option for the baby. Moreover, formulas have superior levels of vitamins and minerals, which helps to ensure the steady growth and development of the child.

It is necessary to consider the individual needs of the baby when choosing between cow’s milk and formula. Whole cow’s milk can be an excellent source of nutrients for children without allergies and special needs. Meanwhile, cow’s milk formulas can provide additional advantages for those children who require a special approach to nutrition.
